Kai sat near the dance floor watching the woman in blue dance. Risha had sent over a bottle of Corolon brandy that did a very nice job of taking the edge off his screaming nerves. It also disconnected him from the writhing ball of need in his gut. He didn't remember ever feeling so… disjointed when hungry. Every cell pleaded for Lucifer's blood because only it could truly satisfy.

Each moment he resisted going to Te was a victory. He had no doubt that if Luc didn't return soon, he'd give in to the addiction—because at this point, there was no denying what it was. He wanted to be angry, but he didn't have the room. The force of will it took not to give in took up any space he may have had for anger. He should have been ashamed because it made him a slave, rudderless without his master.

He took a sip of the brandy, effectively disconnecting the thought before it took deep root. The Corolons were the sole producers of alcohol for the Other-kin community—sole producers because Corolons had trouble grasping the idea of friendly competition. The Other-kin called it alcohol and gave it names like brandy and wine, etc., but no one but the Corolons knew exactly what they were drinking. Fermented dung or water and magic—it was anyone's guess.

What they did know was that if human alcohol didn't do the job, the Corolon equivalent would. Kai was grateful for it and savored each mouthful. He would ignore the craving as long as he could and instead concentrate on hunting. He used to enjoy the anticipation, the seduction, the sensations, and he longed to enjoy the experience again—the brandy would help him relax and get into the right state of mind.

The woman danced with abandon, clearly immersed in the music, and barely attentive to her partner. She wasn't particularly graceful or attractive in the conventional sense, but he was drawn to her anyway. Those were the things that he loved and only now realized how much he missed about the hunt—the little intangibles that made him choose one delicious treat over another.

He knew he was being watched, after all it was widely known that he didn't eat humans. While the purpose of the hunt was to fill his belly, the performance of it in such a public place would provide a satisfying bit of gossip to be spread throughout the Other-kin community. It would be a boon for Risha and the Orion Clan to be the purveyors of such a juicy tidbit of information.

Intoxication was an unfortunate side effect to the calming influence of the brandy. Because of the hunger, every ounce of human blood in the room called to him. Because of the intoxication, he was on the precipice of losing control and giving in to the desire to rip, tear, and drink without end—a desire he hadn't felt since he was young and blood was his entire world.

When had he lost the ability
